The Legislative Library is a parliamentary library and as such collects extensively in areas relating to government and public policy. While these areas are of special concern, the Legislative Library strives to maintain a basic reference collection on many subjects. The Library is primarily concerned with the following areas: economics, law, parliamentary matters, political science, sociology, western Canadian history.
It is not feasible for a library to acquire all materials published. There are economic and space considerations which make it necessary to restrict acquisitions to specific parameters and to the needs of the Library's clientele.

The Library collects philosophical works, particularly those authors whose works have political thought or have been used to justify political positions. As well, the Library maintains a collection on ethics.

[_private/lnbar1.htm]The Legislative Library is a parliamentary library and not a law library but does endeavour to fulfill the information requirements of the the MLAs in their role as legislators and of the Law Clerk's Office. The Library collects extensively in the area of primary legal materials (e.g. statutes, case law, etc.), legal directories, handbooks, and dictionaries. Less emphasis is placed on secondary legal materials, (e.g. law periodicals, texts, etc.). The Library also acquires selected commercial reporting services such as CCH which assist library users and staff in using the primary sources.

The Legislative Library does not collect extensively in the sciences. However, the collection includes basic reference materials, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, etc. in this field. The Library collects material on science policy, and the sciences as they affect Saskatchewan and Western Canada.

The Library collects selectively in management science. The Library attempts to meet the information requirements of the Legislative Assembly's computer system support staff.
The Library does not collect extensively in agriculture except in areas of public policy. The provincial government maintains a library in the Department of Agriculture which collects in this area.
There is no collection emphasis in medicine except where it concerns government policy and programmes in health care and public health.

The Library has no collection emphasis on music, but does acquire some basic reference works in the field.

As well, the Library maintains some collected works of major literary figures (e.g. Shakespeare), and a small collection of works by major Canadian and Saskatchewan authors. The Library does not collect literary criticism.
[_private/lnbar1.htm]The Legislative Library collects in the area of history selectively, but endeavours to maintain a small collection of general reference works concerning the history of most nations of the world as well as the major periods of world history. Emphasis is placed on the political and social histories of Canada and other Commonwealth countries.
The Library maintains a small collection of materials concerning Canadian military forces. Particular emphasis is placed on acquiring books dealing with Saskatchewan military groups or biographical material concerning Saskatchewan military personnel.
The Library also has a collection emphasis on books concerning aboriginal peoples of North America, particularly those groups native to Saskatchewan and the Prairie Provinces. Special attention is given to political and social aspects of these groups rather than to highly technical ethnographic works.
Biographies are collected only as they relate to politics, parliament, and other subjects under the Library's mandate.
The Legislative Library also maintains a small collection of atlases and maps, including a collection of federal and provincial electoral maps.
